Frank Yamma is the voice of Australia’s Central Desert striking a chord in hearts all over the world. Regarded as one of Australia’s most important Indigenous songwriters, Frank’s rich voice and exceptional guitar skills, combined with his honest tales of alcohol abuse, cultural degradation and stories of his country are spine tingling. An initiated Pitjantjatjara man, Frank sings in his native Indigenous language and in English. His mighty songs cross cultural and musical boundaries – a love song sung in Pitjantjatjara will make your heart sing in whatever language you speak.
Bringing his new album ‘Uncle’ to the UK this summer, Frank will perform at Whelan’s in Dublin IRE on Wed 24 June (Tickets).
Frank Yamma is the man Everbody’s Talking about in the world music scene globally, following recent career highlights that include a standing ovation from the notoriously tough crowd at WOMEX ’14 in Spain; opening forJoan Baez at Vancouver Folk Music Festival in Canada; and unanimous applause for his shows at the 2012 Cultural Olympiad London; The City of London Festival; Womad UK; Colours of Ostrava in Czech Republic. The tour follows hot off the back of international touring earlier this year with shows in Latvia, Wales, Shetland Islands and England. Back home in Australia Frank performed at this years’ TEDxSydney in May and is nominated for a National Indigenous Music Award for his new album ‘Uncle’.
The new release, a follow up to his hugely successful 2010 album ‘Countryman’ features songs of country, protection, heartache and travel. And songs of love. Not of love lost, but of pure, present-day raw emotion and shows the continuity of a musician that is hitting his peak with grace and conviction. Frank will be accompanied on keyboards by fellow Australian performer David Bridie. Seven time ARIA award winning songwriter and composer, Bridie has enjoyed a distinguished career as one of Australia’s most innovative musicians. This combined performance featuring two of Australia’s most celebrated performers will be a rare treat.
“The voice grabs you first, a soulful shout of pain and yearning to connect and remember. But it’s the voice, relating hard tales with honesty and emotion that makes this a raw, stripped-back classic.” – The Independent UK
“A POWERFUL cry from the heart of indigenous Australia, an album that deserves consideration alongside the work of greats.” **** The Courier Mail AUS
“the songs …..resonate with grace and power, whilst Yamma’s sense of rhythm and timing in his guitar playing is tinged with the ghosts of old time Delta bluesmen like Lead Belly and Lightnin’ Hopkins…” – Buzz Magazine UK
