More about the John and Donal:

Hailing from highly respected musical families from Northern Ireland, both John and Donal both have been touring internationally and recording from a young age, with the likes of: Lunasa, Dónal Lunny, Lá Lugh, Máire Brennan, Sinead O'Connor, Sharon Shannon, Pauline Scanlon, Brian Kennedy, Bob Brozman and Liam Ó Maonlaí. But their musical paths didn’t cross until they met on Belfast’s traditional session in the early 2000’s.

In 2001 ‘Lúnasa’ founders John McSherry and Michael McGoldrick, put their creative energies to good use with what would become a critically acclaimed collaborative recording. The album, ‘At First Light’ (which later became the name of the band) became an instant top-seller worldwide and was acclaimed by Irish American News as ‘Best Traditional Album of the Year 2001’. The duo was instantly in demand for festivals and venues and called upon the services of ‘Dundalk fiddle prodigy’ Dónal O’Connor and John’s brother Paul McSherry formerly of Tamlin to complete the line up.

The band At First Light went on to tour the world extensively, producing some of the most influential albums in Irish music, with critics describing their music as: “Acoustic Perfection.” Living Tradition and “Equal parts grace & danger” The Irish Times and “Traditional music that feels at home in the 21st century” Folkworld. The Herald Scotland said, “There’s real joy in their playing of fiddles, whistles and Uilleann pipes, and a certain roguish swagger that transmits their enthusiasm for the music directly to the listener with irresistible impact.” The Irish Music Magazine Folk Roots described their latest album Tripswitch as “Medicine for the soul” saying “There’s probably not been such an innovative album released on the green island since Lúnasa’s The Merry Sisters of Fate and Tripswitch probably shatters more boundaries.”

The concert is on at 7:30pm, Saturday 18 June at the Canberra Irish Club. Doors open 7pm.

Tickets are $30 (no reserve seating) & sold directly through the Club on 6288 5088.
