Come on down to the Rod & Gun for Movie Night! This week's installment is Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep (1977).
Stan works in drudgery at a slaughterhouse. His personal life is drab. Dissatisfaction and ennui keep him unresponsive to the needs of his adoring wife, and he must struggle against influences which would dishonor and endanger him and his family. KILLER of SHEEP is a gorgeous portrait of a quiet life, of family, rituals, childhood, oppression and resistance in 1970s Watts, Los Angeles, shot in black and white and featuring an expansive soundtrack surveying the history of African American music.
This was Burnett's first feature-length film, shot for his master's thesis. It was recognized as a national treasure and included among the first 50 films entered in the National Film Registry for its historical importance by the Library of Congress in 1990.
